Vips wins the third race
Motopark’s Jüri Vips claimed his second win of the season at Silverstone, in the sixth round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. The Estonian driver almost led from lights to flag the third race of the weekend, while Carlin’s Sacha Fenestraz finished second. Vip’s team mate Jonathan Aberdein came third to round out the clean sweep of the overall podium for Rookie drivers. Daniel Ticktum scored the sixth position, extending the points’ leader.
Vips took the lead on the opening lap while Fenestraz and Aberdein slotted into second and third place respectively. A collision between Ralf Aron and Sebastian Fernandez on the second lap led to a safety car intervention. At this time, Enaam Ahmed ran in fourth place from Mick Schumacher and Ticktum.
As racing resumed on lap five, positions at the front remained unchanged. Race leader Vips immediately pulled away while his nearest rival Fenestraz initially was unable to increase his margin over third-placed Aberdein. Ahmed didn’t manage to keep up with the South African while he was also under pressure from Schumacher and Ticktum behind him. In the remainder of the race, Fenestraz also pulled clear and eventually brought second place home, just as safely as Vips secured his second victory of the season – as well extending his Rookie lead – and Aberdein did with his third position. Ahmed, Schumacher, Ticktum, Alex Palou, Guanyu Zhou, Ferdinand Habsburg and Robert Shvartzman rounded out the top ten.
“It wasn’t an easy race“, said Vips, “On the opening lap, I had to overtake Sacha for the lead, which was crucial for the rest of my race as I knew that overtaking is very difficult here. Moreover, my rear tyres degraded more and more as the race went on. I am happy that I still have won. That gives me a big moral boost.”
The next round of the FIA F3 European Championship will be run in Misano next week, 25th/26th August.
