Rikli signs Schreiber
Rikli Motorsport will chase more FIA European Touring Car Cup success in 2017 with a new-look line-up. After guiding Kris Richard to ETCC Super 2000 Cup title gold last season, the Swiss squad has recruited up-and-coming talent Christjohannes Schreiber to partner team regular, ETCC stalwart and fellow Swiss Peter Rikli in its TCN2-specification Honda Civics.
With a background in one-make racing, Schreiber, who comes from Switzerland’s Grison region, impressed during his maiden season of ETCC action in 2016, claiming a pole position in Slovakia and a podium finish at the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a Křenek Motorsport SEAT León.
“It’s a great pleasure to represent a Swiss team as a Swiss driver in the ETCC,” said Schreiber, 27. “It makes me very proud and it feels like a ‘national team’ in such an international business. Until now I have not been able to test the Honda but I expect quite a difference from the SEAT I raced last year and never felt as confident in as is necessary for me. I’m convinced that I will return stronger to the ETCC than I was last year. I had some very unlucky races but I gained some precious experience and could learn two circuits of the calendar. I expect a very strong field this year and three tracks are new for me, so there will be difficult challenges.”
Erwin Rikli, Team Manager of the Wangen an der Aare-based Rikli Motorsport outfit, said: “We have known Christjohannes for quite a while. He is a very quick Swiss driver with experience from the Renault Clio Cup and the ETCC. He fits the team very well. Two experienced drivers will help in setting the cars up for the best performance and both have the potential to win the title. We want the team to remain on top.”
Based in Aarestädtli Wangen, Peter Rikli was a ETCC podium regular in 2016 and will once again use race number 12 on his Honda, which is backed by Swiss oil blending and manufacturing company Motorex. “Motorex enables us, since a long time, to race in good conditions. I will do my very best to please Motorex and the other partners; it is my way to thank them for their trust.”
The 2017 ETCC season begins at Monza in Italy from 28-30 April, a circuit Peter Rikli enjoys competing on: “I have good memories of my races in Italy, where I have collected great results since my early days in the sport. This is why I always like driving on the Formula One track.”
