Hyman joins Hitech GP for Asian F3
Hitech GP announced Raoul Hyman for the FIA Asian F3 Championship that kicks off in Sepang next July. The 22-year-old South African racer – fresh from a 2017 GP3 campaign which saw him claiming multiple top-ten finishes and a race win – started his career at twelve years old contesting the British Super 1 National Championship in 2011 and achieving a third-place result in 2012.
Following his debut in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship in 2013, Hyman secured yet another podium result, finishing in 3rd place in the 2014 campaign. His talent gained special recognition from the BRDC, naming him as a Rising Star for achieving the most podiums in the series. Gaining further experience in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in 2015, Raoul once again proved his on-track capabilities with five top-ten finishes and one Rookie podium. More recently, 2017 marked Hyman’s debut in the GP3 Series, rounded off with a number of top-ten finishes, in particular with a spectacular victory at the Red Bull Ring.
The Silverstone-based team will be contesting the full FIA Asian F3 Championship, which expects to see a grid of 24 cars for its opening round. The championship is run under the umbrella of the FIA’s new Regional F3 concept, which Hitech have claimed is an “ideal feeder” into International F3, which is set to become a Formula 1 support series in 2019. The Asian F3 Series will feature a mix of professional and amateur drivers, competing in Formula 3 cars that conform to the FIA F3 regulations, adopting the development of the new single chassis, single engine concept.
“I am thrilled to be competing in the inaugural Asian F3 Championship and especially excited to join Hitech Dragon GP”, commented Hyman, “The team is extremely professional in their approach and are motivated to win, so I’m happy to be joining their ranks. Our aim is to hit the ground running and mount a successful championship assault from the very first round in Sepang. I’m really looking forward to getting the season started.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Raoul to the Asian F3 squad”, Hitech GP’s Team Principal Oliver Oakes added, “With his proven talent in junior formula the past few years, we are confident that Raoul will be a great fit for the Asian F3 campaign.”
