Fuoco claims Race 3 victory
After 17-year-old Prema Powerteam’s Esteban Ocon won the second race of the weekend at Silverstone, his team-mate rookie Antonio Fuoco clinched the victory in Race 3 today. The Italian protégé of the Ferrari Driver Academy, finished ahead of Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing). Lotus F1 junior driver Ocon also stepped onto the podium and now leads the FIA Formula 3 European Championship drivers’ standings.
Fuoco managed to overtake polesitter Ocon at the start and then extended his lead throughout the race. Ocon came under increasing pressure from Verstappen. On lap two, the Dutchman first overtook Tom Blomqvist (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) and also made his way past Ocon on lap eleven. The son of ex-Formula 1 driver Jos, took the chequered flag in second place.
Initially Blomqvist ran in fourth place behind the three fast rookie drivers, but first Nicholas Latifi and then Antonio Giovinazzi overtook the Brit, demoting him to sixth. Felix Rosenqvist, Lucas Auer, Jordan King and Félix Serrallés were classified in seventh to tenth place.
My race start was fantastic, I managed to overtake Esteban right away. I believe that was the key to success. This was my first weekend in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and I am really delighted that I can already celebrate my first win. – said Fuoco.
