FIA F3 European grid takes shape
With two more months to the season kick-off, the grid of the FIA F3 European Championship is taking shape. With the two new squads Signature and Team West-Tec, the 2014 season will be contested by a total of 14 teams. To date, 15 drivers have officially been announced.
Italy’s Prema Powerteam that will contest the 2014 season after winning the Team and Driver title with Raffaele Marciello last year, already announced three drivers: Antonio Fuoco, Esteban Ocon and Dennis van de Laar. 19-year-old Dutchman van de Laar already has one year of experience in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship under his belt, while Ocon and Fuoco advance to the series from Formula Renault 2.0. 17-year-old Frenchman Ocon, who is supported by the Lotus Formula 1 team, impressed last year by securing a top-10 result in his F3 debut in Macau. In the 2013 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season he achieved two race wins and finished third in the championship. His team-mate Fuoco (17) is reigning Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS Champion and is member of the Ferrari Driver Academy.
Mücke Motorsport signed 19-year-old Lucas Auer. In the 2013 season, the Austrian finished fourth with Prema Powerteam. Auer will be teamed-up with 19-year-old Israeli Roy Nissany, who is going to contest his second season in the series.
Team Carlin will be represented by Jake Dennis and Ed Jones. Jones (18) is the reigning European F3 Open Champion. Dennis is also 18 years old and won the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC in 2012. The trio Tom Blomqvist, Sean Gelael and Antonio Giovinazzi also will race under the guidance of Trevor Carlin and represents the colours of Jagonya Ayam with Carlin. Blomqvist is the son of 1984 World Rally Champion Stig and finished seventh in the campionship last year for Eurointernational. Giovinazzi and Gelael in 2013 raced for the British team Double R Racing.
21-year-old Briton Richard Goddard is going to race again for team T-Sport. The squad of Russell Eacott also announced the 17-year-old Spaniard Alex Toril who finished fifth in the 2013 European F3 Open.
Antonio Ferrari’s Eurointernational have signed Riccardo Agostini. The 19-year-old Italian shone by winning the 2012 Italian Formula 3 Championship.
Gustavo Menezes will join Van Amersfoort Racing. Last year the US-American finished fourth in the ATS Formel 3 Cup.
For their debut season, Team West-Tec already signed Félix Serrallés, the 21-year-old from Puerto Rico who celebrated two wins in the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European Championship for Fortec Motorsports and finished 11th in the championship.
In addition, the teams Double R Racing, Fortec Motorsport, Jo Zeller Racing, Ma-Con Motorsport, URD Rennsport and returnee Signature also enlisted for the 2014 season but have not yet announced their drivers.
