Deletraz, Joerg inaugurate the NEC Series
Josef Kaufmann Racing‘s Louis Delétraz and his team mate Kevin Jörg won at the Monza track the first two races of the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC.
In Race 1 Delétraz dominated from the pole. The son of the former F1 driver Jean-Denis, celebrated his first victory in the 2-litre Series ahead of Ukyo Sasahara. The Japanese of Euronova Racing lost a place after starting from the front row and completed the first lap behind Delétraz and Andrea Pizzitola (Manor MP Motorsport). On lap three he found a way past Pizzitola and set about chasing down Delatraz who had built up a good margin. Sasahara pushed hard and by the end of the 14 lap he had reduced the gap to 0.8 seconds, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process, and took the first podium finish of his single seater career. Pizzitola eventually finished third, with Levin Amweg (ART Junior Team) in fourth. Pizzitola’s team mate Steijn Schothorst scored the fifth place ahead of Alex Albon (KTR) and Jörg.
Race 2 saw Jörg and Delétraz on the first row. Jörg set pole in the second qualifying session and took the lead. Schothorst made up the top three. Sasahara and Albon touched in the Ascari chicane and the Japanese had to leave the race with a broken rear suspension. Albon stayed in fifth place, but got a drive-through penalty for jump start and finished 18th. Ben Barnicoat (Fortec Motorsports) drove a very good race as he started 13th and finished in fourth position. Raoul Owens (Mark Burdett Motorsport) scored the sixth place from P20, but got a 5-second penalty for cutting the second chicane to finish ninth. Fifth was Pizzitola.
