de Vries claims first victory

Dutchman Nyck de Vries won the first race of the 2014 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 at the Motorland Aragón circuit. Koiranen GP and McLaren Young Driver Development Programme driver had a start to finish victory ahead of Egor Orudzhev (Tech 1 Racing) and Bruno Bonifacio (Prema Powerteam), claiming his third season’s win after having dominated both the races of the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS at Imola early this month.

De Vries, who also set the quickest time of 1:55.474 in the qualifying, that allowed him to start ahead of ART Junior Team’s Aurélien Panis, maintained his position when the lights went out, under a very light rain, while Orudzhev surprised Panis to move into second place. Bonifacio and Alexander Albon (KTR) followed the leading trio. Meanwhile, Kevin Jörg (Josef Kaufmann Racing) got past team mate Gustav Malja, for sixth place.

At the end of lap two, Bonifacio and Albon got past Panis, who then had to fend off the attacks from Jörg, just until the Swiss driver spun. Extending his lead lap after lap, de Vries went on to take the first win of the season. Orudzhev finished second ahead of Bonifacio, Albon and Panis.

It is a really good start of a season. After a great qualifying session, the first laps were really hard with the rain drops. As I led the race, I didn’t know how hard I could push, but when the rain stopped, I was able to be more confident and I managed to build a gap. – said de Vries.
