Casiraghi to make Scirocco R-Cup debut
The fifth season of the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup is set to kick off on 3-4 May at the Hockenheimring, as a support race to DTM and FIA F3 European Championship.
The saloon car series will consist of ten races over the course of six race weekends and will see the debut of Pierre Casiraghi, the 26-year-old son of Princess Caroline. The idea of inviting the blue-blooded guest star came from racing legend and Volkswagen ambassador Jacky Ickx, who has known Casiraghi since his childhood.
This year’s Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup will feature 19 regular drivers from eight different countries. One of the favourite to win the title is 17-year-old South African Jordan Lee Pepper, who was still in contention for the title right down to the final race last season, ending third overall. Pepper will be joined by Denmark’s Nicolaj Møller Madsen, German hope Manuel Fahnauer, Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky and Victor Bouveng (both from Sweden).
Together with Ahlin-Kottulinsky, who finished runner-up at the Nürburgring last year, Switzerland’s Jasmin Preisig, Lucile Cypriano from France and German Doreen Seidel, complete the four flying ladies. Cypriano earned her ticket via the talent competition run by the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission. Seidel (28) was Playmate of the Year in 2008.
Like last season, the drivers still have the option of using the push-to-pass system, which momentarily increases the performance of the Scirocco by 50 hp to 210 kW (285 hp). Push-to-pass may only be used six times in free practice and is not permitted during qualifying.
