Caroline takes win number nine
Jamie Caroline has secured a dominant win for Carlin this afternoon in the 2017 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford following a race which saw the British driver deal well with a strong start and a safety car period to take his ninth race win of the season. The amazing tally for Caroline also saw him break the previous record number of wins for a single driver over the course of a season in the competitive Championship – set by Carlin racer and 2015 Champion Lando Norris. Logan Sargeant fought well to take fourth position as his own while both Patrik Pasma and Lucas Alecco Roy enjoyed top ten finishes in ninth and tenth respectively.
Launching well off the line from second on the grid for the reverse race it was Carlin man Caroline who took the lead from Manuel Sulaiman who had lined up on pole position. The opening lap of the race, as is normally the case with reverse grid races, was a frantic dash for position as the drivers all looked to improve. After the opening lap, Caroline began to pull a strong lead while Sargeant was seventh, Pasma 13th and Roy in 15th.
Caroline used the next few laps to extend his advantage and seemed to come under very little pressure from behind. Meanwhile the mid-field the battle was beginning to get interesting with eight cars in total, including both Sargeant and Pasma, running nose to tail as they all squabbled for positions. Roy meanwhile was making progress and was up in to 14th position overall.
However a safety car was brought out on track to deal with the stricken car of Karl Massad who managed to restart and get going just a short time later, leaving a touch of fluid on track which required cement. This in turn meant that Caroline lost the gap he had gained over Oliver York and Alex Quinn behind as the field bunched up; by this point Sargeant was fifth, Pasma ninth and Roy 11th.
On the restart Championship leader Caroline remained calm to keep his lead and begin to build a gap once again with only four minutes left on the clock while further back Sargeant, Pasma and Roy also held steady in their respective places. Soon enough however Sargeant lined up Linus Lundqvist; setting him in his sights, the American pushed hard and took fourth position as his own.
The next few minutes passed in seemingly complete tranquillity for Caroline who at the front was in a league of his own and took a brilliant victory around the Snetterton 300 circuit. Sargeant crossed the line in a strong fourth position while Pasma and Roy both enjoyed solid races to finish ninth and tenth respectively.
Caroline’s victory takes his 2017 season tally to nine in total – a new winning record for a single driver in the F4 British Championship. Speaking of his win Caroline said, “It was spitting a little bit with rain out there but to be honest I don’t think it made that much difference to the track. We were faster out there this afternoon than we were in qualifying and race one this morning so I’m pleased with that. The White Wizard [race engineer Harvey Spencer] did his thing and it worked so we took the ninth win of the year – breaking a record in the process. It’s been a great year so far, we’ve pulled more points this afternoon too and I’m over the moon for myself and the team.”
